Travel Insurance for Turkey: All-Inclusive Resorts, Cappadocia and Istanbul
Turkey isn't in the GHIC scheme, so travel insurance carries the full weight here. Here's what UK travellers need to know.
Turkey has been a UK favourite for decades — and unlike most of Europe, it isn't part of the GHIC reciprocal healthcare scheme. That makes proper travel insurance even more important.
No GHIC means full medical responsibility
UK visitors pay for all healthcare in Turkey. Private hospitals in Antalya, Bodrum and Istanbul are fast and English-speaking but charge Western prices. Look for at least £5m medical cover.
Hot air ballooning in Cappadocia
Cappadocia balloon flights are covered under standard travel insurance for the vast majority of UK policies — they're operated as commercial passenger transport and treated like any other tourist activity. Make sure your operator is licensed and insured (ask before booking) and double-check your policy explicitly mentions ballooning.
All-inclusive resort claims
The most common Turkey claim is food poisoning at all-inclusive resorts. To claim:
- See the resort doctor or hotel medic and get a written report
- Report it to your tour operator in writing while still on resort
- Keep any medication and pharmacy receipts
- Notify your insurer within 28 days of returning
Mass-claim "outbreak" cases are sometimes refused without strong individual evidence — paper trail matters.
FCDO advice and the Syria border
The FCDO advises against travel to areas within 10km of the Syrian border. Travelling there voids your cover. Mainstream tourist destinations (Istanbul, Cappadocia, the entire Mediterranean coast) are unaffected.
Driving in Turkey
UK licences are accepted for short stays. Drive defensively — Turkish roads see a high accident rate, and any crash will need both rental car insurance and your own travel insurance for personal injury.
Earthquakes
Turkey is seismically active. Earthquakes are covered under natural catastrophe provisions — cancellation if your destination is officially evacuated, curtailment if the trip can't continue.
