Single Trip vs Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance: Which Is Cheaper?
If you take more than two holidays a year, an annual policy is almost always cheaper. Here's the maths — and the trap most people fall into.
One of the most common questions we get asked is a simple one: should I buy single trip or annual multi-trip travel insurance? The honest answer is "it depends" — but the maths is easier than you think.
The two-trip rule
As a very rough rule of thumb, if you're going to take two or more trips a year, an annual multi-trip policy will usually save you money. Take three or more, and it's a no-brainer.
Quick price comparison
For a healthy 35-year-old travelling in Europe:
- Single trip — 7 days: ~£12
- Single trip — 14 days: ~£19
- Annual multi-trip — Europe: ~£35
- Annual multi-trip — Worldwide: ~£65
So two 7-day European breaks (~£24) is right at the break-even. A weekend in Dublin plus a fortnight in Spain (~£31) and you're already saving with annual.
When single trip wins
- You only travel once a year
- It's a long trip (4+ weeks) — annual policies cap individual trip length, usually at 31 days
- You want destination-specific cover (e.g. cruise, winter sports) for one trip only
- You have a complex pre-existing medical condition and want to disclose only for the trip you're taking
When annual multi-trip wins
- You take 2+ holidays a year — even short city breaks
- You travel for work as well as leisure
- You like to book last-minute weekends away
- You want the peace of mind of always being covered
The trip-length trap
Almost every annual multi-trip policy has a maximum trip duration — typically 31 days, sometimes 45 or 60 on premium policies. If you take a five-week trip on a 31-day annual policy, you are uninsured for the whole trip, not just the extra days. Always check the trip length cap.
Adding winter sports or cruise
Both can usually be added to either single trip or annual cover for a flat fee. Winter sports adds around £15–£30 to an annual policy and gives you cover for skiing, snowboarding and piste-related accidents for the whole year.
Family annual policies
Annual multi-trip really shines for families. A family annual European policy is often only 30–50% more expensive than a single-adult one — and it covers two adults plus dependent children up to 18 (or 23 in full-time education on most policies). Children are also usually covered when travelling with one parent.
