Travel Insurance for Morocco: Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara

Morocco is increasingly popular with UK weekenders heading to Marrakech and longer-stay travellers exploring the Atlas Mountains and Sahara. Here's what your travel insurance needs to cover.

Region classification

Some insurers price Morocco as "Europe" (because of geography), others as "Worldwide". Always check before buying — Worldwide pricing is usually only £5–£10 more for a week.

Medical cover

Public healthcare is limited. Private clinics in Marrakech, Casablanca and Rabat are good but expensive. £5m+ medical cover is recommended. Repatriation by air ambulance from remote areas can be very costly.

Atlas Mountain trekking

Trekking up to 4,000m is included as standard on most UK travel insurance policies, which covers Mt Toubkal (4,167m — just over the line) on most upgrades. For:

• Toubkal summit: add high-altitude trekking
• Multi-day Atlas treks with guides: standard cover usually applies
• Climbing or via ferrata: needs an adventure upgrade

Camel rides, quad bikes and 4x4 desert tours

• Camel rides — covered as standard tourist activity
• Quad bikes — covered as a passenger; as a driver usually needs a powered-watercraft style upgrade
• Sandboarding — covered as standard
• Hot air balloon — covered with licensed commercial operators

Riad cancellation

Most Marrakech riads are non-refundable. Cancellation cover protects this if you have to cancel for an insured reason (illness, jury service, FCDO advice change, etc.). Buy your insurance the day you book — not the day you fly.

FCDO advice

The FCDO advises against travel to areas near the Western Sahara border and parts of the eastern desert. Standard tourist routes (Marrakech, Fez, Chefchaouen, Essaouira, Sahara overnight tours) are all unaffected.
