Travel Insurance for Mexico: Cancun, Tulum and the Yucatán
Mexico's Caribbean coast is one of the UK's fastest-growing destinations. Here's what your travel insurance must include.
Mexico is a long-haul destination with USA-style healthcare prices in the resort areas. Travel insurance is essential — and a few details catch people out.
Medical cover
Private hospitals in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Mexico City are excellent and bill at near-USA rates. £10m+ medical cover is recommended.
Cenote diving and snorkelling
Cenote (sinkhole) snorkelling and shallow diving are covered as standard. Full cenote cave diving requires a tech diving upgrade — and a cave diving qualification, without which any claim will be refused regardless of policy.
Hurricanes
The Yucatán hurricane season runs June to November, peaking in September and October. Standard cover includes:
- Cancellation if the FCDO or Mexican authorities advise against travel
- Curtailment if you have to leave a region under evacuation
- Travel delay benefits if your flight is grounded
"Bad weather" alone (without official advice change) doesn't qualify for cancellation.
FCDO regional advice
The FCDO advises against travel to several Mexican states (parts of Tamaulipas, Sinaloa, Michoacán and others). Tourist destinations on the Caribbean coast (Cancun, Riviera Maya, Cozumel, Holbox), Mexico City, Oaxaca and Mérida are unaffected. Always check before booking.
All-inclusive resorts
Same as Turkey — food poisoning is the most common claim. Get a written report from the resort doctor, notify the tour operator in writing, and keep medication receipts.
ATV and zip-line tours
- Zip-lining — covered as standard with a licensed operator
- ATV/quad biking — driver usually needs an upgrade, passenger included as standard
- Swimming with whale sharks (Holbox/Isla Mujeres) — covered as standard
