Family Travel Insurance: How to Get the Best Deal for 2025
A family policy is almost always cheaper than separate ones. Here's exactly how 'family' is defined and how to get the best deal.
Family travel insurance is one of the easiest places to save money — children are usually included free or at a heavy discount on a family policy. Here's how to make sure you're getting the best deal.
How insurers define "family"
Most policies define a family as one or two adults plus their dependent children, all living at the same address. "Dependent" usually means under 18, or under 23 if in full-time education.
Single-parent families
Single-parent family cover is widely available and usually only marginally more expensive per adult than couple cover.
Children travelling with one parent
Almost all family annual policies cover children travelling with just one of the named adults — useful if one parent takes the kids away during half-term.
Grandparents taking grandchildren
This is trickier. Most family policies require children to be the dependents of the named adults. Look for a "group" policy or buy each grandparent + grandchild as separate single trip cover.
Should I buy single trip or annual?
If you're taking just one summer holiday and one short break, annual will almost certainly be cheaper than two single-trip family policies.
